Modern-day conservatives are fighting to conserve their power, while modern day liberals are fighting for the liberty of the ordinary person. That is and always has been the dynamic; conservatives just try to muddy the waters and confuse people with lies like 'we believe in the constitution and the spirit in which it was written'. BS--the only thing conservatives believe is that they have a God-given right to their privilege and power over regular people and they are willing to do whatever it takes to conserve that power.
@nhautamaki@AndrewRusherTerms like "conservative" and "liberal" really do not apply when talking about the Constitution.Yes, the Constitution and the entire American experiment were "liberal" airbag reset for the late 18th century, in that to be conservative in those days mean to support the Old Regime of an absolute monarchy, a single national church, and a hereditary aristocracy.In that sense, both liberals auto diagnostic tool AND conservatives today would be liberals in the 18th century.However, in many ways the constitution was a more conservative document, especially when compared to the Declaration of Independence and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. It was a document that reflected the suspicion of democracy and the people held by the early framers. Only 1/2 of one branch of the three branches of government was selected through popular election. Also, the original document did not contain a Bill of Rights. It also gave far more power to the federal government and the executive branch than the Articles of Confederation, the previous document that organized our government.Terms like liberal and conservative are relative and are so weighted down with baggage today that they obscure, rather than illuminate, meaning.
